Sils through to Mixed Plate Finals week-end

The Old Silhillians Hockey Club hosted Teign Hockey Club in the quarter final of the England Hockey Mixed Plate this week-end. The prize for both teams was the chance to go through to the cup finals week-end held at Sheffield Hallam, a venue that is now t
Having travelled 3 hours from Exeter the visitors arrived remarkably early and settled into a structured warm up while the Sils emerged in one by one just in time for the start. The Sils apparent arrogance (merely a sign of disorder) proved to be well placed confidence as their fast paced hockey took control of the game. 20 minutes in the home side were 2-0 up thanks to 2 clinical finishes from Tom Mallet. A lapse in concentration allowed Teign to counter attack and win a short corner which they converted with a second strike into the top corner of the nett. The next goal would be crucial and the south coast side pushed for the equaliser. This gave the Sils more space in the attacking half and a well worked move was finished off by Sam Cooper at the far post. 3-1 up at half time and no mention of Liverpool slip ups allowed.
With the thermometer reaching 23 degrees the Sils reluctantly lost 2 of their squad to coaching commitments for the second half. A couple of early goals, one by Simon Clapham and another for Tom Mallet(his hatrick) took the sting out of the opposition and sealed the game. As the game settled into a summer tour friendly vibe there was time for Dan Sulway to score a trademark Penalty Corner flick, Teign to get a consolation from a Penalty Stroke and Sam Cooper to have the last word with a neat deflection passed a stranded goalkeeper.
The Sils now play the semi-final on June 7th hoping to book a place in the following days final. Check www.silshockey.co.uk for details of the weekend and plans for a supporters army.
