Sils put Solihull rivals to the sword (eventually)!

The Old Sils continued the defense of their National Mixed title on the weekend by hosting local rivals Blossomfield.

The game started with a predictable fast pace with both sides having fielded strong teams. Whilst the Sils controlled most of the early possession it was the visitors who opened the scoring with a fortunate deflection to a strong straight strike. The visitors pushed home their advantage with another goal from a quick shot through a crowded D that wrong footed the keeper. Sils wrestled back control of the match for a short period via a well worked penalty corner that saw Tom Mallet deflect the ball into the goal. The Bloss centre back was adjudged to have deliberately fouled Tom Mallet in the D and a Penalty Stroke was awarded. Dan Sulway stepped up, having sent the keeper the wrong way his powerful shot was just wide. The Sils continued to push for the equaliser but we were slightly lax in defense and conceded a third. The Sils managed to get a goal back through the quick reactions of Jai Le Resche, who latched on to the rebound from Harriet Payne’s strike. The final play of the 1st half saw Bloss score another to take a commanding 4-2 lead into halftime.

After some stern words from the Captains Clapham and Ennis together with a few tactical changes from the Manager Matt Fell, a revitalised Sils team took the pitch in the 2nd Half determined that their Cup run would continue. The Sils started hard and fast, with the hard work of the forwards Kat Berns, Tom Mallet and Jai Le Resche repeatedly being rewarded with Penalty Corners. The Bloss defence held firm but the onslaught took its toll as a clever routine between Sulway and Mallet saw Sulway slam the ball home from close range. The Sils continued to exert pressure and Naomi Ennis scored a great deflection on the back post from a Tom Harrison cross, to level the scores. Tom Mallet put the Sils in front for the first time with his second goal that rocketed into the top corner. Bloss were now starting to feel the pace of the game as Sils kept rolling their subs. Bloss threw caution to the wind in search of an equaliser but in the dying moments the Sils pushed on the counter attack started by Emma Rosser, and Jamie Clapham won, and scored the penalty stroke to make the final score 6-4 in an entertaining and well supported game.

Sils have been rewarded with an away trip to Formby on the Mayday bank holiday weekend!
