Lichfield 3rd XI 0 - 1 Old Silhillians 1st XI
By Stephen Tabb
Victory for makeshift Sils side
With a few players unavailable for different reasons, and then additionally two late cry-offs, the 1s travelled to Lichfield with a squad akin to that of one that could have played in 1994, with Oppenheimer, Tabb, Dovey, Thurman and Levenger gracing a 1st team pitch together for the first time in many years.
What ensued was what was described by some as the most comfortable 1-0 victory many of us had played in - though Lichfield did still create a few half-chances and the Sils defence still had to stay alert up until the final whistle.
As it happens, the win was secured via a PC goal from Matt Northcott, but whilst the Sils dominated possession, the home side did an impressive job of stopping the Sils attacks in whatever way they could meaning the ball was never close enough to the D for long enough to result in further goals. It is fair to say that Eti and Matt in particular ended the game somewhat black and blue!
In the end though, 3 points and a clean sheet for a make-shift team is all we need to worry about.
