Competitive Start to the Season

4 Debutants enjoy first experience of Lions
Sils entertained local rivals Solihull Blossomfield on a glorious Saturday afternoon.
Caro Kappes filled the adult slot, playing for the Lions for the first time, and whilst a number of players were entering their second season of Lions hockey, Melissa Thurman, Gil Grace and James Wilson were all making their Lions debuts.
The Blossomfield team generally edged all the battles across the pitch - with their players all a little more experienced and physically larger in all areas. Josh Bowley in goal for the Sils had the much busier time, making a number of excellent saves throughout the match, and the home defence worked hard to keep the skillful visiting attack under control. Oliver Harris was outstanding, winning the ball time and again, and with Ollie Williams and Kheya Ballentine-Brain providing the "engine" in midfield, Eva Robinson and Matt Hulbert both had a small number of half-chances, but not enough to trouble the Bloss GK who had just played in a ladies league match.
The second half continued as the first, with Bloss doing most of the running and pressing high up the pitch. Hence, it was no surprise when the visitors finally scored the decisive winning goal as they latched onto a pass across the top of the D and fired home from close range.
Sils continued to work hard, but could not force enough of a chance to get back into the game. James Wilson and Melissa Thurman ran hard in the last 10 minutes, getting more and more into the game, and the future looks bright if these young players continue to develop as fast as they currently are!
