The Sils Select XI defeat the Hockey for Heroes squad in their first practice match during their final training weekend.

The Sils put in an impressive performance to defeat a Help for Heroes squad that contained 3 National League players, including one who played in the Euro Hockey League last season.

Following a minute's silence held in honour of former Men's 1st Team Player Ed Shaylor, and fallen soldier Lee Rigby, the game got off to a fast start in very warm conditions.

In reality, the game was very even, but with the Help for Heroes relying heavily upon penalty corners to look for goals, they struggled to score on the dry, and slow, Sils pitch.

As it was, the Sils took the lead through an excellent passage of play down the left channel, with Simon Clapham instrumental in the build up, before Tom Mallett picked out Matt Fell at the far post for the simplest of tap-ins.

Just before half-time, the Heroes were almost certain they had equalised from a PC, when Tom Pickersgill's powerful drag-flick flew past Paddy O'Malley in goal, only to be plucked off the line by Tom Harrison, who not only managed to prevent the ball from going into the net, but also managed to deflect the ball off the back line.

At half-time, the score remained 1-0 to the home team.

The visitors came out all guns blazing in the second half, and equalised through an unstoppable drag-flick from East Grinstead forward Adam Jordan.

However, that was as close as the Hockey for Heroes squad would get, as minutes later, Jamie Glynn smashed home a penalty-corner of his own with a straight strike thundering against the backboard. Minutes later, a high press led to Tom Mallett forcing a visiting defender to lose the ball, with Mallett then beating his man in the corner of the pitch to then allow him to run into the D, and smash the ball home.

There was still time for another 2 high-quality goals; first a ball crossed from the right by Andre Tchakhotine was deflected deftly past the keeper by Matt Fell for his second of the match, and with just two minutes remaining Dave Baylis picked out Tchakhotine at the top of the D who created some space and rifled the ball into the top left corner of the goal.

A very impressive display by the home team with some excellent goals, some superb defending, and some great link-up play in very hot conditions.
