Russell double a highlight in defeat

So a trip to sunny Evesham - home of market gardening, charity shops and Pershore HC. It was a makeshift team that assembled (eventually) in the rain against a strong and dangerous looking first team. The new league structure is making for some 'interesting' games, and this was no exception.
It was clear from the start that Pershore were a force to be reckoned with. They attacked with pace and directness, and within 6 minutes, Sils were 2-0 down. The siege continued and despite the willingness of the entire team to dig in, it was tough going. Pershore scored three more times before half time, and it was only a consolation from Nick Oppenheimer that prevented it becoming a complete rout.
Half time - changes, tactical re-think and a good cry was needed. Having done all that, Sils looked much more cohesive in the second half. Great work from the youth of Ollie, Pema and John - along with a sterling effort from Rob Smith who was battered more than a Findus Fish Finger. Sils were also helped by the increasingly surreal ways that Pershore were being sent off; including one for urinating against a fence!!! That's one for QoS. Two goals from Simon Russell from penalty corners; and a superb team goal finished by Ollie Peel gave hope for the future. Pershore did score twice more; but the Sils should take heart from a great second half, and the idea that we will get tighter as a team.
It was a disappointing defeat, and we don't feel happy about that. On the plus side, there is a good team spirit developing, and we have the spine of a good side. MoM was between Rob and Simon - with the Russeller taking the vote based upon his two goals. Next week, we travel to the Real Madrid of local hockey - Stourport.
