Well another league season commenced for the Mighty 3s as we had an away day to Worcester. Captain Si Russell had assembled a mixed team of has-beens and youth, and spirits were high as we trundled down to the 'Worcester International Hockey Centre' - which seemed a grandiose name for an astro in the middle of allotments, but there you go.
Worcester looked useful from the start, and the Sils had to endure an early siege as the red hordes poured forward like the Zulus at Rorke's Drift. The defence was ably marshalled by the redoubtable Jon Clutterbuck, and the youthful Sils defenders showed great resilience. Several shots came in, but they were dealt with effectively, and Jim Goldstraw only had to make 3 saves. The Sils attack used aerials well, and the Worcester goal was threatened on occasion. The half was played in a great spirit, and only one card was issued - it was a tight battle.
Half time saw Captain Russell exhort us to keep the faith (what is he? an evangelist? -Ed), and the spirits were still high. Yet again Worcester swept forward, but it was Sils who broke the deadlock on 47 minutes when Jimmy swept in a finish from the right after a flowing Sils move that would have done the great Ajax side of the seventies proud. Worcester were stung into a response and levelled shortly after. The game was opening up as legs tired, and the midfield of Foord, Russell and Barton were working hard. The young players were superb, and Callum Rice restored our lead from a PC. Again, Worcester responded - 2-2. As the game entered the final 10 minutes, Sils were under pressure, and many saves were made. However, Worcester nipped in with a winner and that was the final action. 3-2 and a defeat.
Team spirit was excellent and the young players (Dom, Sam , Harry and others) look very good. It was a lovely social at the Worcester club, and then back to Sils for tea and medal. Player of the Match was Harry - well deserved.
