Sils Win Round One

With Bridgnorth not playing this week Sils could go top of the league with a win over West Bromwich who drew 3-3 with the league leaders just last week. North Staff won their early game 4-0 versus Hampton in Arden to take them second on goal difference.

The squad was a strong one with Si Russell stepping back in as the anchor of midfield with the legs of Josh Rice. It also saw the return of Simon McGuirk and Tom Rose both in the back four.

The warm up was thorough and very beneficial for all even John Scott who was doing his normal yoga/rolling on the floor by the dugout and from this warm Sils reaped the benefits early on with a good turn and shot from Thurman, the ball was fired in from Smithy and with his back to the goal Thurman calmly took it wider of his marker and flicked it in to the corner.

From then on West Bromwich came at Sils strongly with attack after attack, it was only through some amazing net minding from Jim Goldstraw that kept them out, one save was made diving down low to his right hand side and tipping it around the post with the underside of his stick, truly amazing.

Goals were also denied again from sublime defending thsi time from Simon McGuirk clearing a sure goal off the line.

It was a feisty affair from the start and the umpires did a great job apart from disallowing a certain goal at the death to make it 2-0, a green each side and a yellow to West Bromwich for a naughty foul on Tom Rose was seen but it could have been more, however Sils came off a little bruised and battered 1-0 victors and that win sees them go top of the league with a friendly lined up next week v Kings Heath.

A well deserved man of the match to Tom Rose, who would have thought he had been away for three weeks!!!!
