Sils Mighty 4s took the minimum eleven to Coventry and found themselves up against a far more experienced and physically stronger squad of 14 at Sikh Union 3rds last Saturday.

Fielding what must surely be the youngest ever Sils M4 team – just 3 adults , 6 players aged 13-14, and 2 aged 15-16, the early stages saw the visitors start the stronger, with Olly Cooper and Oscar Watkin up front causing the Sikh defence all sorts of problems with their direct running. Despite forcing numerous shots and several penalty corners however, it was the home side who scored first against the run of play, when ill-advised calls of ‘leave it’ from both John Harrison and Dave Higgins left the excellent Alex Scott in Sils goal with no chance. Balance was quickly restored thankfully, with Oscar Watkin slamming the ball home from yet another Sils attack.

The interval brought a positive team talk from JH and DH, and team supporter Pete Scott provided a welcome throw-back to the 1980’s by bringing half time oranges – thank you Pete! The vitamin-C boost clearly did the trick as Sils came out for the second half on fire!! A superb display saw a dominant whole team performance, building from the back and using both flanks to great effect. Oscar added a second – he is surely looking to take the Top Goal-scorer award away from Andy Rush this season – and James Wilson, on his debut, added an excellent third. The whole performance was topped off with an outstanding move down the left – James W, Olly Cooper and Oscar W combining superbly with quick inter-passing before an inch perfect cross found Reece Nijram on the far post for a tap in, his first goal for the club. A goal of the season contender for sure...

With no league match this week, the M4s will certainly not want to lose momentum – this win takes them second in the league and well placed for a promotion push.
