Stephen strike is the difference

At last!!! Victory against one of our stronger local rivals. It was a strong looking team that assembled in the wasteland of St Nicholas park on a moody, blustery evening. Our record here of late has been unimpressive - to be fair if it had been a league fixture we would not have assembled enough points to have been banned from driving. But we were optimistic.
Capn Gary felt that attack was the best form of defence, and proved this by putting Nick Oppenheimer at left back. This is like putting the Scarlet Pimpernel there - so the rest of the defence knew that it would be a challenging evening. Nobby does bring an attacking force to left back and is less prone to mental collapse than other incumbents of that spot. The first half saw an even contest, as Sils looked very dangerous going forward, and in normal circumstances would have scored several goals in the 35 minutes. Rich Thurman and Nick Danks went close, and it looked liked a goal was inevitable. However, the Warwick keeper was helped by having a forcefield around his goal, and this prevented any chance being converted.
At the other end Warwick always looked dangerous - and it was only down to strong defence and some good keeping that saw our goal remain as unviolated as a nun in the Vatican. Half time arrived with it 0-0 - and more exciting than the scorecard suggested.

Second half - a re-jig and a belief that (are you ready for this!!!) we might have more legs than them. Sam Stephen was running around like the Duracell bunny, and completed 4.4 miles in the game. Nobby did 3.2 miles in one direction and Nol did 1 mile in one run when he went forward like Ronaldo, and trundled back like Ivor the Engine. Still no breakthrough. The all seeing eye arrived with 25 minutes to go and stated the 'this wasn't the strongest Warwick team' - inspiring stuff - and we still felt threatened at times. with 12 to go, it was finally great work from the midfield that allowed the flamboyant Thurman to drag the keeper out of position to allow Stephen to strike home - nailed it!! The large crowd of the Chairman and a packet of crisps went wild.
The last ten minutes saw us largely control the game with the redoubtable Chris Thompson to the fore. At the end, 1-0 was as close as the game had ben. We then retired to the hostelry to talk nonsense, eat sandwiches and vote for Chris Thompson as MoM - deserved.
Next up - we have Hampton at home. It is hoped that following the example of the midfield dynamo more players will were pedometers so that we can accurately track the effort levels in the team. In the meantime, I am off to see if Nobby has tracked back yet. Have a nice day.
