Back to earth with a bump

The scene - the Pas de Calais in June 1940. The might of the German Wehrmacht sits looking across the Channel contemplating the invasion of Britain. Hitler is concerned - he doesn't think he has enough men. He rings London. "I am thinking of attacking you" he tells the telephone operator, "have you got a spare man?". "Certainly" replies London; "we will give this bloke called Churchill." How different might the war have turned out.
Okay - the link is weak but when Worcester arrived with ten men, the hockey player in me thought 'UNLUCKY'. Captain Perkins and Mark Dovey are far nicer, and it was agreed that one of our key men would play for them.
It was not the best start - but it was then combined with a perfect storm of averageness and ineptness from the Sils. It was one of those nights where everything went wrong. It is a worrying trend this year that we sometimes enter a twilight zone where the ball turns into the Golden Snitch and we cannot keep hold of it. Worcester were solid and competent - but we were truly dreadful at times.
Imagine "Sils gave the ball away and Worcester score". Now repeat six times and you just about have the result. We scored a consolation through Mr Danks at the end; but frankly this was one of those nights to forget. Even the beer did not taste very nice.
The lesson of the night? - Keep the ball, learn from a mistake and as my old grandmother who loved cricket used to say 'never give your grandfather a full toss on his 80th Birthday.
Matron - pass me the revolver, I'm going for a walk in the woods.
