First win since Brexit

Well my dear old things, what a night. Remember the date - 9 November 2016 ( a date that will live in infamy). Sils last won a game before Brexit, before Sam Allardyce and before Trump (that's the man NOT the bodily function). It was a pleasure to welcome Sutton back after a two year hiatus, and we assembled a strong side - including the combative Max Levenger (who will run if you ask him nicely), and Sam Stephen (who needs TLC or he will be as grumpy as Olaf the Hairy, King of the Vikings who ordered 80 000 helmets with the horns on the INSIDE).
Sutton had a scratch side, and Jim helped their novice keeper pad up before the game. This was encouraging, and we suspected there might be a frailty there. The game began at a fast pace - and Max. Sils were applying as much pressure as possible, and Sutton were creaking like a clipper ship at full sail. Goals began to fly in, and we had a potent force. Keith Leeson scored the first and then promptly retired hurt for another four years. This was a blow - but softened by the fact that goals were flying in. In the words of the 4th team "the Mighty Sils were bossing the game" (always remember - humility as the slaves in Ancient Rome said to the Emperor during the parades past the Coliseum). It was soon 2-0 thanks to the delicate Stephen but then Sutton roared back. They had a succession of PCs and score to make it 2-1. It was at this point that the redoubtable Nol Mortimer arrived to watch the game. It was like welcoming a long-lost illegitimate son. Come back soon Nol.
From then on.it became a Sils Masterclass (thanks 4th Team), and goals were being scored on a regular basis. The tenacious Danks ran a good shift, the ebullient Thurman scored twice and the evergreen Warren Gray ran about well (nice compliment - Ed). Sils defence was solid and Thompson and Dovey are as reliable as an Austin 8 touring the Home Counties in the 1940s.
Half time - 4-0. Surely even a Gary Perkins team talk could not screw this up??? It was nice to be able to see the game after the Dartmoorish atmosphere of last week. Second half, we emerged with the cheerful ambience of the second half of 'Escape to Victory'. Six more goals flew in , and Sutton worked really hard - but had several novices and were not able to complete. Max produced a sublime twist and turn that was more Darcey Bussell than Sils hockey. He was able to complete a fine hat-trick as did Sam. Two from Thurman, one from Mr Danks and the opener from the now departed Leeson meant it was 10-1 at the end. A nice way to get back to winning ways. Cap'n Perkins and his concubine were happy, and it was a cheerful team that retired to the Bistro A La Stephen Tabb for cuisine after. Sutton were excellent opponents, and will only get stronger. It was great to see them back. It was also good to see all come in for refreshment. MoM was close but it was a deserved Sam Stephen who won which is great (at least it will delay his retirement another week -Ed). Next week, it is a trip to the Loyal City (Worcester), and we hope that this winning feeling will be maintained.
