Berkswell that ends well

A Monday fixture - and away too. It was all excitement as the Old Boys assembled for a trip to Coventry to play a new opponent. It is a new adventure every week in the Vets.
Captain Gary Perkins had assembled a strong team - with the welcome return of the 'Deadly Submarine' Adrian Brindley. It was a lovely evening, and hopes we high. However, we were one short at the start as the absence of Nick Danks was noticed. It transpired that he was busy cruising the campuses of Coventry University (probably prompting a police alert) looking for the pitch. Tip for the future - follow the floodlights! Or more likely the trail of Help the Aged posters leading to the game.
So to the game. We had a makeshift defence, a rapid midfield and a forward line as potent as Viagra loaded into a cannon. The game started at a good pace, and straight away we caused problems. The redoubtable Sam Stephen and the burly Thurman caused problems, and there was real threat up front. The Sils were as scary as a Donald Trump press conference. We went ahead through Stephen and then doubled it through Mr Brindley. We were causing problems with pace (really??? - Ed), and Thurman was pulling more strings than Nigel Kennedy. Some killer balls, some great passing and a lot of sweating (even when he was standing still) helped create two more goals from Stephen and Stephen again. He is more prolific than Rudolf Valentino when he plays like this. Unfortunately he also tried to score goals from 18 yards (which is against the law Rich!!!-Ed). However, it was 4-0 and Sils were cruising.
Then, Berkswell came roaring back. The Sils defence held firm for a while (helped by the cheerful comments and countenance of Chris Thompson), but just before the break they scored. 4-1 and would this be the beginning of a famous Berkswell comeback?
Half time was a cheerful affair. Chris Thompson told some amusing and cheery anecdotes, John Rice passed the water bottle (!!!! - Ed) and there was talk of keeping it tight.
You have guessed it - Berkswell then scored two goals in five minutes - including one roofed shot that was as intended as trying to paint the ceiling and then blowing up the house. 4-3 and the Sils were twitching. Some solid defensive work from Tony 'The Banker' Jamieson and the skipper helped and then we found our second wind. More goals from Mr Messy, Mr Brindley and a tap win for the wandering Danks saw us come home with a 7-3 victory.
It was a good game. Berkswell were excellent hosts, and we retired to the pub for some elaborate food well ordered by Mrs P, and a huge round courtesy of the four-goal Stephen. MoM was also Stephen so it was a red-letter day for him as he also ran 4.5 miles and had to travel home in a car with Jim's goalie kit. Mmmm - fragrant. Next week, we have a rematch against Lichfield who I suspect will bring a formidable side to play. See you next week.
