Sils slipped to a narrow defeat

Sils slipped to a narrow defeat on their travels to Stone losing 1-0. This was always going to be a difficult fixture with five members, including the Captain, unavailable and the reliable Ally Taft having to leave at half time. Stone setup as expected with two extremely fast forwards and more or less everyone else behind the ball which kept the Sils defence on their toes throughout the game with their opponents counter acting at pace. Undeterred Sils started well taking the game to Stone although few clear cut chances were created Georgina Jones showed well and her extra pace was what had been lacking in recent weeks and proved a direct threat with her strong running.

Stone scored the only goal of the game a third of the way through the first half as their fast attack stretched the defence and a fierce shot span into the goal having been saved by Jo Brett at the first attempt. Not to be down heartened Sils continued to battle away and after a fine run down the left a reverse stick shot by Jones had the stones keeper flinging herself full length to cover the shot which narrowly went past the near post.

Sils had a goal disallowed on twenty minutes for a foot infringement but this didn’t get them down and they kept on battling to the end of the half having the majority of the play although finding difficulty penetrating the heavily defended D.

The second half started well with Sils quickly on the attack with Claire Robinson and Samantha Cooper combining well down the right as they attempted to carve out further chances.

The solid defensive partnership of Becky Bakewell and Kate Huntington at the back broke down numerous attacks and good interceptions by both prompted renewed attacks on the Stone defence. However, with a lack of substitutes in the second half legs began to tire but when Stone did break through goal keeper Joanne Brett was up to the cause diving full length to push a shot around her post. With ten minutes remaining Emily Green was pushed up front to add guile and pace to the flagging attack but to no avail as Stone continued to defend in numbers and the final pass could not quite find a Sils forward to finish the moves off.

A much better cohesive display than in previous weeks and with a bit of luck when needed, the result could have been oh so different and a point would have been well deserved. But there are promising indications that things are starting to click into place at last.

MOM – Claire Robinson, outstanding game holding width on the right feeding the forwards and defending well throughout the game.

DOD – Amy Perrow, Quote “i’ll meet you there as my boyfriend lives nearer the ground to save coming back!!” in reality this means i will then forget my shin pads and have to travel all the way home to go and fetch them and then back for the match. So does Stafford (just down the road) not have any shops.......

Extra special DOD award – Kat Berns, Captain extraordinary purveyor of dodgy directions, numerous holidays, promises of making matches there is no way she can make and just for being Kat we award the extra special duh award!!
