Sils loose out after promising start

Sils loose again but only after giving league leaders Uttoxeter an almighty shock. Within the first minute of the game Uttoxeter having the pushback raced onto the Sils defence which repelled them and swiftly setup a counterattack feeding Clara Miles on the right who raced forward and slipped the ball across the pitch to Naomi Ennis to easily beat the

Uttoxeter keeper for her first goal for the club. From the restart Sils were more positive than in recent weeks and with the pace of Ennis and Miles on either flank were causing the league leaders immense problems.
Uttoxeter recovered from the early setback and settled into their game plan and were soon attacking the Sils defence again which started to concede a number of short corners although dealing with them admirably. Clara again driving to the baseline forced a short corner from which the resulting hit was turned in by the reliable Ally Taft. By this time Sils were ecstatic and Uttoxter were stunned but Uttoxeter have one player who with her physical presence, quick thinking , and deadly hard hitting accurate strikes had the ability to change a game and she started to bring her influence to bear and the visitors started to overpower the Sils midfield. From a spate of short corners on 26 and 32 minutes they had managed to claw their way back into the game and had levelled the scores.

Ten minutes into the second half Sils were able to force a short corner but to no avail and within three minutes were finding themselves chasing the game after Uttoxeter had managed to score from open play. The real turning point came with six minutes to go when in making a goal bound save goalkeeper Joanne Brett inadvertently conceded a penalty flick with which was converted by the narrowest of margins. With Brett having to go off for treatment Sils played out the last few minutes but conceded a goal late on with the ball being lifted into the roof of the net with pace which the outfield players had little chance of preventing.

Losing 5:2 sounds harsh after such a bright start but on reflection conceding two from short corners, a penalty flick, and one more when the goal keeper was off the pitch puts some context to the game. It has been a hard season although there are still games to play the intensity has been matched, the youngsters coming through are living up to their potential and the experience is being shared throughout the club. All we need now is the fun and enjoyment side to return and the team and club will benefit greatly.

MoM – Samantha Cooper – Another tireless display in midfield supporting the forwards picking the ball up from defence and disrupting the attacks wherever she could.
