Sils go top with well constructed victory

Old Silhillians 1st XI 4 (3) - (1) 2 Cov & NW 1st XI

Goalscorers: Libby Shepherd, Sophie Williams, Sophie Boyle, Caro Kappes

Sils entertained Cov & NW for the second time this season, though this time with more at stake. The first half performance was impressive, with all players contributing, and the side took a 3-0 lead, with two goals from Penalty Corners - Sophie Williams reacting first to turn the ball in after an initial keeper save, and Sophie Boyle picking her spot to fire in from the right of the D. The other goal came from close range from Libby Shepherd, turning the ball home after good build up play down the right.

The end of the first half gave the visiting side a glimmer of hope though - with the ball seemingly drifting out of play in the bottom left corner for Sils, the Coventry striker chased the ball down, and then won a Penalty Corner, from which the resultant strike found the home net.

The second half seemed to be quite one-sided, with Sils creating some great positions on the pitch, but Coventry defending well, meaning that the only goal for them came from a trademark strike from Caro Kappes, cutting in from the right and firing into the roof of the net on her reverse. However, what should have been a comfortable victory, became slightly nervy when Coventry broke away with 8 minutes to go and scored their second goal.

Thankfully, Sils were able to see out the remaining minutes with no further scares, and the win saw them moving back to the top of the league due to Nuneaton beating Atherstone.

Player of the match was tied between Emma James and Annabel Dalby, with the coach opting for the skipper to edge it (even after her horror minute in the first half!)

(It would also be lapse to not mention the amusement of our little Chilean superstar arriving 45 minutes late for the start time after falling asleep......)
