Resilient defence by home team gives Sils a scare

Coventry & NW 1st XI 1 (0) - (1) 2 Old Silhillians 1st XI

Goalscorers: Frankie Levey (x2)

Sils travelled to Coventry looking to celebrate Sophie Boyle's 30th birthday with another win to inch them closer to the league title. The team were met with a glorious day and took a strong looking 14, though with Annabel Dalby carrying an injury, this meant that the Sils were able to slot the ever willing Izzy Gardner into the side.

The game played out in expected fashion - Sils looking to play fast, attacking hockey, and Coventry defending in resolute fashion, causing their own problems with their fast duo upfront. In the first half, the Sils defended well and kept this pacey threat under control, and created a number of chances, paticularly through a number of Penalty Corners, but for the first 25 minutes the side was unable to score, with the home keeper making some good saves.

The opener finally came from a predictable pairing - Caro Kappes dancing in from the right, firing a reverse-stick shot at the far post, and goal poacher Frankie Levey deflecting home from close range. This was how the score remained for the rest of the half though.

The start of the second half caused some slight concerns in the Sils ranks though - a good quick transfer down the left out of the Coventry defence released the home forward, and with Lucy Connors trying to keep up, the home forward accelerated away and as she entered the D, deftly flicked the ball in at the far post. 1-1, and Sils worried.

However, the team stuck to their task, and applied their processes, and re-took the lead with 12/13 minutes to go, once again, Kappes unleashing a reverse stick shot, this time in the air, and once again, Levey was on hand to deflect home. This had been preceded by several saves by the excellent home keeper, and she was still able to make another two or three saves from player of the match Ursula Santos before the end of the game.

Final Score 2-1, and a little step closer to the title. Hampton drew with Leamington later in the day, meaning Nuneaton are realistically the only team able to catch Sils now. 4 more games....
