Old Silhillians 3 (2) - (1) 2 Stratford
Goalscorers: Flo Collins, Eva Robinson, Donna McGettigan
Stratford 2s are a bit of a bogey team for Sils - and so this game also proved. With the two teams at different ends of the table, this should have been a far more comfortable victory for the home side, but in the end the winner came in the last minute with Donna McGettigan scoring from the edge of the D with a well placed shot - though Emily Hilton's close presence to the ball probably helped to distract the keeper as well.
At half-time, all seemed well, the Sils were 2-1 up, with Flo Collins and Eva Robinson having converted from two flowing moves.
Even the start of the second half did not suggest anything would be a major issue with the home side dominating play and winning PC after PC. In fact, they believed 10 minutes into the second half, that they had scored a third, with Emily Hilton's flick finding the bottom corner, only for both the home and away team to be surprised by the goal being disallowed - either because the ball had initially not left the D at the PC, or the shot had taken place from outside the D dependent upon which version you heard - either way, the pesky line markings on the Sils pitch strike again!
As the second half progressed, and two efforts from Laura Porter were deflected off the line, and further shots from Eva Robinson and Flo Collins were saved, it felt more and more like the ball was never going to go in, and it may be one of those games that Stratford snuck a late equaliser. Sadly, this is exactly what happened - with the one time Stratford were able to break away, and force an initial save from Maddie Richie, the ball was expertly fired home by the Stratford Captain, to make it 2-2 with only minutes to play.
Thankfully, this Sils side is made of sterner stuff these days, and driven on by the determined McGettigan, several more chances were created in the final two minutes, and the ball finally went in, to leave Sils with the narrowest of wins.
