Champions elect have to put champagne on ice

WARWICK 2 - 2 OLD SILS

I would suggest this was almost our best performance of the season, and is testament to the team spirit that exists in DJ Mo's Army. A scratch team was assembled to play on the Smurf Turf at Warwick School, and as we dribbled in, we were treated to a well-drilled Warwick warming up like a North Korean Army. It was impressive, and we did get the feeling that we were seen as the Christians compared to the lions in Ancient Rome. However, this was to help inspire us.
The game started fast. We really competed and after a brief 5 minute 'warm-up' period, we took the game to Warwick. Milz and Pitcher were like a pair of rocks at the back, and they thwarted many attacks. The midfield also put in a shift, and DJ Mo was leading from the front. It was a fast-paced and skilful game; and like so many times this inspires people to play better. Sils took the lead after 20 minutes when Dan Jones slipped in for his 19th goal of the league season. He is a real threat up front, but much of the support work done by Thurman, Oppenheimer and Charles Pottinger is crucial. Warwick had chances, but these were snaffled by the defence and Jim in goal. The large Warwick contingent watching were perplexed -this was not in the script.
Half time and 1-0 up. We knew that Warwick would come hard at us, but we had a plan and we had the men (that does not rhyme - Ed). Warwick came out at pace, and they are a good side to be fair. The defence held firm until the 45th minute when a shot was deflected and looped into the net for an equaliser. This did not mean Sils dropped. In fact, we responded well. Jones and Hadian went close, and both Nicko and Jamie created real threat. We defended so well, and with 6 minutes to go, we scored again as Jones bagged his second. Could we hold out? Warwick threw everything at us, and with 3 minutes to go they scored after Jim made a double save only for the third shot to bobble in again. This was James Bond time - and the team dug in. Two Warwick shorts were defended and the final whistle blew for a much-deserved draw.
So it was two draws against the top of the league and seven goals. A well-earned pint in the Porridge Pot saw us feel it was an evening to enjoy. We have two home games left - and third place in the league is a possibility. Well done to all - and well led DJ Mo.
