Dominant possession not quite enough to force the win

The season is now in full flow, and Sils travelled across the conurbation to take on Old Hales at their fortress of King Eds. Captain Russell was in command of a youthful side - with a few exceptions - and hopes were high after some good performances against strong opposition in the previous weeks.

Sils made a fast start - and the great thing about a young side is the pace. The enthusiasm of the Sils players was reminiscent of the young men assembling in 1914, and Hales were pinned into their 23 for the ten minutes. The pattern of the game was established early, as Ollie Harris, Harry GP and the burly figure of Dan Jones all went close. The Old Hales keeper resembled Horatio on the bridge defending the city as the Assyrian horde swept down. How Sils failed to score was difficult to comprehend, and frustration mounted. To their credit, Hales were a danger on the break, and Jim Goldstraw made several saves, and the defence needed to be marshalled well by the veteran Barton and the falstaffian figure of Charlie Russell. The game was quick and the first half ended after a breathless spell 0-0.

Half time saw words of wisdom dispensed - and also Rich Foord said a few things. The second half followed the same pattern as the first. Lots of Sils pressure, lots of shots, bar and post being hit and occassional Hales attacks. Ruthvik was causing real problems with some mazy runs, and it was deserved when Jones finally slotted home after 55 minutes. Almost inevitably, Hales struck back within 4 minutes after a short corner broke down and the ball was scrambled home. Surely, the fates would not conspire to rob Sils? Hales had their best spell of the match, and the defence needed to be on their mettle. Dom Higgins was very impressive, and further chances came Sils' way. In the end, the deadlock could not be forced, and a draw had to be taken.

It was a shame the win could not be forced - but spirits were high during the post match festivities. Ruthvik was a deserving player of the match, and the youth accepted the fine session in a good heart. Captain Russell was interviewed afterwards and said "we are getting there. I am looking foreward to taking the team on a winter training camp to the south of Spain soon. I have paid for it - so all are welcome." This was a nice way to finish the day. Next week, we play the Real Madrid of midlands hockey Stourport. It's on Sky - 4.30 start.
