14 October - a day filled with history. The Battle of Hastings in 1066, 1947, Chuck Yeager breaks the speed of sound - and most significantly the Mighty 3s rolled over to the UoB to play another gang of youthful individuals seeking a solid 2:2 whilst bankrupting themselves. Arriving at the Commonwealth pitch, the hordes were in attendance to support the students. We had limited support - but at least we had another encouraging mix of youthful exuberance and grizzled experience.
The game started in a lively atmosphere as many of the student supporters were making ribald jokes, and using a loud hailer to encourage their heroes. How we laughed!!! Early UoB attacks led to early saves from Jim, and some great defensive work from Sam, Dom and Clutz. It did feel like it was going to be a long day. We competed - but were certainly under pressure. The students went ahead from a fast break, and this was doubled just before half time as another quick break saw another slick finish. However, we were starting to grow into the match - and the midfield was holding firm, and Ruthvik began to frighten the students as much as their Student Loan Reminder letter. Half time - 2-0 - and some encouraging words from the skipper galvanised the team. It was also quieter as many of the student supporters had left to go and watch CBeebies.
Second half saw an excellent shift from everyone. The young players are not daunted by situations, and they also have some fight. Rich led the way protecting his fellow midfield, and then Dom nearly had a handbag exchange following a 'heavy challenge' which would not have been out of place at the aforementioned Battle of Hastings. The Uni scored again - but then Ruthvik scored the goal of the game which surprised our hosts. To their credit, they bounced back and scored another just before the end. 4-1 was the final result - but a performance many could be proud of.
Teas and the post-match debrief took place in the 'Uni Bar' which had about as much character as a flaccid cheeseburger. Ruthvik was deservedly Hero of the Week, and as we waited for Clutz to find his way to the bar (having been the only one to have a shower!), we reflected that things seemed to be on the up. Next week was a big game against the barbarians at the gate from Olton. A win would be nice.
