Another innovation brings another defeat

Well another Wednesday in God's Waiting Room Squad. And another innovation. This time it was brand new shirts - freshly arrived from a sweatshop in Chennai. The Veterans gathered before the match at The Stade du Stephen Le Tabb, and were like excited pensioners receiving their giro. Even the GK had a new smock, and we did look smart. However, the big question was would it affect the performance.

It was a strong squad that greeted our visitors from the deepest, darkest Wuster (that's how they talk down that way - Ed), and we started confidently. There was some lovely passing from all the boys, and with the industrious Stephen, the aggressive Danks and the socialist Kent (do you mind - AK) up front we always looked as dangerous as a teenager with an empty bottle of vodka. It was no surprise when Nick Danks and Adam Kent linked well to put Danks through on goal. 1-0 and the crowd went wild. The country boys came back well, and put the Sils under pressure. Would the new shirts cope with the sweat? You bet - as Steve Aylin and Chris Thompson held firm. Then we broke away, and the hard-working and skilful Kent (that's £50 he owes me - Ed) broke through. 2-0 and Sils seemingly on easy street. Half time arrived, and we thought the new shirts were an omen.

How little we knew. Half time talks in the Veterans can have an unusual effect. Sometimes it's like telling an 8 year old to not eat chocolate cake before tea. You know that within 5 minutes, they will be covered in chocolate drops and the nice meat and two veg dinner will go to waste. Well this was the case on Wednesday. We agreed to play higher up the pitch, and put them under pressure. What did we do instead? We retreated more than the Italian Army, and gave Worcester space, freedom to play, all the 50-50 balls and probably access to our bank accounts and a small Vietnamese midget to play with when they were bored. The collapse in the 2nd Half was startling and Worcester penetrated our D more than Warren Beatty ever did to Carly Simon. they score 4 goals in 15 minutes, as we did fall apart to an extent. Despite Sam Stephen running 4.5 miles, and Nick Oppenheimer making a welcome return, we lacked cohesion. There are patches sometimes when the Vets can fall apart in quite spectacular fashion.

Fortunately, we recovered our shape for the last 10. We scored an excellent short corner courtesy of Sam Stephen, and did make the end quite exciting. However, it ended 4-3, and the Fantasy League points once again took a hit. We retired to the bar to lick our wounds, and sink some ale. It was good to see an excellent turnout of the old red trousers; and some excellent debate was enjoyed. Wuster stayed for some beers and food, and the MoM was decided to be Adam Kent - after a casting vote from Gary Perkins after a 3-way tie.

Sils need to get back to some winning ways. We have a chance with the trip the home of the Bard on Monday week. See you then sports fans
