Welcome return to Capn Perkins

Well the Vets games resumed after a mid season-mid-season break. It was a pleasure to see the prodigal son Gary Perkins return, and there was also a re-emergence of the injury-prone Andrew 'ouch' Scott who took on the umpiring duties.
It was a strong Vets team - with very little chance of either physical and mental breakdown. We would need to be good, as Olton arrived with all the swagger and humour of Darth Vaders Stormtroopers hunting for princesses and droids. Some clubs have that aura - and Olton are amongst them.
The game started and it seemed as though our worries would be confirmed. As the winds of Storm Caroline gathered, the Olton storm also arrived. There were several shots, some attacking play and one or two laughable claims for flicks. The Sils defence were led by the slightly Germanic looking Chris Thompson who reminds me of a U Boat captain at times. He was impressive, as was the midfield of the Worcester reject, Perkins and the nippy Oppenheimer. We looked challenging at times, but Olton are impressive at the back. Finally on 22 minutes, Olton put together a flowing move, and passed the ball into the net. This was a disappointment - but the Old Boys are made of sterner stuff these days. The speedy Chuckapony arrived to bring pace, and it was good to see some threat from both right and left. It was like Berlin in 1920, with the Weimar Republic under threat from both Communist and Nationalist wings. Thurman - the left (slightly unconventional, idealistic with his runs and looks like a serf). Rice - the right (ordered, sticking to what he knows and with a slightly 'action man' hair), Both did well, and without some good work from the Olton keeper, we could have levelled.
Half time was a subdued affair, and we wondered if Olton would up the tempo. They did - but to be fair so did we. There was plenty of goalmouth action with both keepers playing well. Olton had HK up front who began to go through his whole back catalogue of swearing (which is half his vocabulary) as he became frustrated. It was a night for frustration and Dovey was especially dramatic as he launched his stick into the ground with aplomb. As the game approached its' climax, Oppenheimer and Danks came very close, and Dovey struck wide from a PC. Then Olton with their umpteenth attack scored the second to put the game beyond doubt. As the winds gathered, the whistle blew and it was time for curry and beer.
We retired to the pavilion just in term to see the OSAAGM kick out. It was like watching a mixture of bankers and freemasons be released into the community. We were joined for curry by the All Seeing Eye and the Child Catcher. MoM was voted and went to a deserving Thompson. Next week is the Christmas warm-up v Sutton before the sellout match against the Mighty 4s.
