A game of two halves as Sils are pegged back

Another week and more changes to the team but undeterred Sils travelled away to take on Sutton Coldfield 3’s against whom they have struggled in the past and losing heavily in the previous encounter.

Sils started the game on the offensive and taking the game to Sutton who seemed rocked by the avalanche of white shirts that were streaming into the last 25 and for once midfield was tight being anchored by the double presence of Ruth Dovey and Jessica Jecketts forcing any reprisals from Sutton down the wings. With the forwards pressing well and causing mistakes to be made by the Sutton back line loose balls and misdirected passes were being picked up by the Sils midfield to once again feed the attack as strong running once again from Tamara Majevadia was starting to ask questions of the slower defenders. On one of the looser passes out of the defence Dovey latched on to it advanced into the D and fired home for a deserved goal. Sutton did come into the game more and started to use the wings as an avenue of escape and their back line started to concentrate on big hits down the side to cut out the middle. But as they started to come back into the game gaps were emerging through their defensive line and this allowed Tamara to sprint into the D latching onto yet another through ball and scoop the ball over the advancing keeper to extend the lead midway through the first period. Sils were enjoying a good spell of hockey and Sutton were chasing shadows with no real idea of how to turn the game around all looked well at this stage but chances created by Sils went begging an open goal was opportunity was missed and Sutton manged to clear two clear chances over the line with the defence frantically hacking goal bound shots away.

The second half though was a different encounter and the next goal was always going to be decisive but for some reason Sils seemed to relax their grip on the game allowing Sutton to come back into it and causing problems where there hadn’t been any before. With Sutton seemingly more positive and with use of their quick wingers they were able to force a number of short corners and goal opportunities. Whilst the defensive unit were keeping them at bay and the short corners routinely dealt with there was a feeling that Sils ascendency was starting to wain and with another attack mounting Sutton forced their way down the wing and advanced down the bye line where the ball was cut back for an advancing forward to hit home. As time progressed Sutton pulled another one back from a short corner and as chances were missed at the other end tension mounted that the game didn’t completely fall away from Sils grasp. But as the whistle sounded the tired legs were at last given time to relax and take in what had happened.

In effect Sils are now the second top goal scorers in the division, they took the game to Sutton who heavily defeated them in the last encounter. A new style team gelling together with the nucleus of the squad being stronger than in previous seasons, apart from a few heavy defeats initially the team is playing well with a good mix of experience and youth.

We need to be more focused this week which means no phones and listening to what Jamie and Jess say first time. There are players in the second team who are good enough to play firsts, so there is competition for places now - attitude is incredibly important.

Any problems please let me or Issie know.
